Toddler Counting Activity

z
This simple and fun toddler counting activity is a great way for your child to work on number recognition and practice counting.

Supplies Needed:

  • Scotch tape
  • Double sided Scotch tape
  • Construction paper of various colors
  • Ribbons in various colors
  • Magic marker
  • Scissors

Simply cut out 5 diamond shapes to serve as the kites and cut enough ribbons for the tail pieces. Tape one long tail onto each kite. Use the marker to write the numbers 1 to 5 on each kite. Secure a piece of double-sided Scotch tape to each tail. Each piece should be long enough to hold the "cross-tail" pieces for each number. If your child needs prompts for counting, use the marker to place the correct number of dots on each tail. (See the photo below.) Have fun counting!!!

This is a great activity to work on grasp and release skills, and as your child's skills advance, they can even add a spoon and work on scooping!

Pom poms of various colors
Small boxes to make the 2 dice

Now it's time to play! Roll the dice. The color of the side facing up is the color of the pom poms that the child will remove from the box using the chip clip or tongs. The number of the die showing is how many of the pom poms to remove. Be sure everyone gets a turn, and have fun!!!

This project was completed by a Master of Occupational Therapy student at The University of Tennessee Health Science Center and posted with permission.

Teaching Counting Creatively!

Do you know a child who struggles with learning numbers and counting?  Well, here is a simple and creative way to teach counting! You will need four or five different colored cups and pom poms with corresponding colors.  Glue or tape each number and it's appropriate number of "dots" on the cup.

Begin the activity with the pom poms mixed together on a surface in front of the cups.  Having the child place the correct number of pom poms in front of each cup pointing and using one-to-one correspondence and the dots as a guide.  Once the child has placed the correct number of pom poms in front of each cup, he can place them inside the cup. Make this task more challenging and address fine motor skills by having the child use tongs to sort and place the pom poms.
